Locomotives & Rolling Stock
The Georgetown Loop Railroad has steam locomotives, diesel-electric locomotives, coach cars, parlor cars, and the luxurious Waldorf and Tahoe cars for all kinds of historic experiences.
Steam Locomotive #111
Steam Locomotive #111 (pronounced one-eleven) was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1926 and originally operated on the International Railway of Central America, where it primarily operated within the Republic of El Salvador, and occasionally operated in Guatemala. The 111 was returned to the U.S. in 1973 to the Sundown & Southern RR in Hudson, CO where it never ran, and was auctioned off in 2002 to the town of Breckenridge, CO for display at the Highline Railroad Park. History Colorado acquired the 111 in 2008 and entrusted it to our Silver Plume Engine House for restorations beginning in 2013. Engine No. 111 was finally restored to service in 2016 and has since been an important part of the Georgetown Loop fleet.
Steam Locomotive #40
Georgetown Loop Railroad #40 is a B-4G class 2-8-0 “Consolidation” built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia, PA in 1920 for the International Railways of Central America (IRCA). The #40 operated there until the 1960’s. In 1968, the owners of the newly founded tourist railroad in Central City, CO went down to Central America in search of locomotives. They found two sister locomotives that would be useful, the #40 and the #44 (also a B-4G class 2-8-0). A deal was consummated for the purchase of the #44 and a deposit of $1,000 was applied to the future purchase of the #40. While #44 was sent to Colorado shortly after the 1968 purchase, finances did not allow the finalization of the purchase of the #40 until 1972. The #40 was transported along with another sister engine #111 (now Georgetown Loop Railroad #111) on the International Railways of Central American rail line to the border of Mexico where they were transferred to standard gauge flat cars for the trip to Colorado. Locomotive #111 went to Hudson, CO for a future museum there and #40 went to Central City. In about 1974, the owners of the Central City railroad came to an agreement with the Colorado Historical Society (now History Colorado) to rebuild and operate the Georgetown Loop Railroad and the #40 was moved to Silver Plume where it worked along with sister engine #44. In 2000, the owners of the Georgetown Loop Railroad Inc. operating company came to an agreement with the White Pass & Yukon Railway (WP&Y) in Skagway, AK to loan that railroad #40. The locomotive operated in Alaska for several years until being returned to the Georgetown Loop Railroad in about 2002. Due to a change of operators of the Georgetown Loop Railroad in 2005, the #40 went to the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden and resided there until 2017. In that year, the current operator (Historic Rail Adventures) purchased the locomotive from the first operators and began a lengthy restoration process for #40. The locomotive returned to service in 2019.
