Locomotive Engineer
Historic Rail Adventures, LLC (HRA) offers guests a narrow-gauge rail experience through The Georgetown Loop Railroad and Mining Park. The unique train ride, various mine tours on offer, picturesque alpine setting and proximity to Denver draws a global audience of nearly a quarter-million visitors throughout spring, summer, autumn and early winter. HRA is seeking a Locomotive Engineer to operate a steam or diesel-powered locomotive while providing safe and timely service for Georgetown Loop Railroad guests.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
· Interpreting train orders, signals, or railroad rules and regulations that govern the operation of locomotives
· Monitor gauges or meters that measure speed, amperage, battery charge, water level, steam pressure, temperature, and air pressure in brake lines or in main reservoirs
· Observe tracks to detect obstructions
· Receive signals from conductors and use controls such as throttles or air brakes to drive steam or diesel locomotives
· Operate locomotives to transport freight or passengers between stations or to assemble or disassemble trains within rail yards
· Respond to emergency conditions or breakdowns, following applicable safety procedures and rules
· Confer with conductors or operating officers via radiophones to issue or receive information concerning stops, delays, or oncoming trains
· Inspect locomotives to verify adequate fuel, sand, water, or other supplies before each run or to check for mechanical problems
· Prepare reports regarding any problems encountered, such as accidents
· Call out train signals to assistants to verify meaning
· Check to ensure that documentation, such as procedure manuals or rulebooks, are in the locomotive’s cab and available for staff use
· Inspect locomotives after each excursion to detect damaged or defective equipment
· Check to ensure that brake tests are conducted at stations
· Must attend all scheduled training & testing classes for engine crews
Required Qualifications:
· Basic mechanical knowledge
· Ability to use hand tools
· Ability to lift 80 lbs. and push or pull 100 lbs. (with the aid of mechanical devices)
· Ability to stand for extended periods
· Ability to maintain balance walking on uneven surfaces
· Ability to climb ladders and a variety of equipment

Steam Locomotive Mechanic

The unique train ride, various mine tours on offer, picturesque alpine setting and proximity to Denver draws a global audience of nearly a quarter-million visitors throughout spring, summer, autumn and early winter. HRA is seeking a dedicated Steam Locomotive Mechanic whose primary purpose is utilizing specialized knowledge and skill to maintain, construct, repair and operate historic steam locomotives. Additionally, the Steam Locomotive Mechanic is responsible for assisting Welders, Shop hands, or Machinist with locomotive projects with hands-on maintenance work.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
· Assist Welders, Shop hands, and Machinist, including Chief Mechanical Officer and Contract Services personnel as needed by providing advice, input or feedback about locomotive work and projects proposed or in process as requested
· Perform the function of a mechanic as assigned
· Observe steam locomotives in operation to identify problems and their sources
· Perform specialized maintenance and inspection of locomotive boilers, steam driven appurtenances, steam and water piping, tender tanks, running gear, engines and other locomotive systems
· Fabricate parts using machine and hand tools, welders, cutting torches, plasma cutters, and other metal working equipment
· Keep workplace clean and orderly
· Comply with instructions provided by supervisors
· Operate machinery such as but not limited to forklifts, telehandlers, skid-steer loader, backhoe
· Remove and replace defective parts using lifting equipment such as overhead cranes as required
· Document work as required
· Perform additional duties as required
Required Qualifications:
· Position requires specialized knowledge of the construction, maintenance, repair and operation techniques related to historic steam locomotives.
· Working knowledge of FRA regulations.
· Enthusiasm for the company and its mission.
· Ability to carry out verbal or written instructions.
· Proficient in the use of welding machines, oxy/fuel torch rigs, plasma cutters, angle grinders and other metal fabrication tools
· Proficient in the use of machine tools, such as band saws and manual lathes and milling machines.
· Proficient with the use of hand and power tools.
· Ability to read and work mechanical drawings.
· Strong project management skills.
· Working knowledge of arithmetic, geometry, trigonometry, and algebraic math.
· Organizational skills and careful attention to detail.
Willingness to work at heights on ladders, scaffolds, man lifts or on top of rail mounted equipment.
· Availability to work flexible hours, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
· Willingness and desire to learn.
· Additional qualifications such as familiarity with CAD drawing software, mechanical engineering principles, ASME and NBIC codes and experience as a certified conductor or engineer are desirable.

Track Lead

HRA is seeking a dedicated worker for our Track team. The Track Maintenance Laborer plays a vital role, ensuring safe and efficient movement of the train and guests—through diligent, ongoing track installation, maintenance and repair. The ideal candidate will have experience in Railroad Maintenance of Way work and effective communication skills.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
· Conduct thorough railroad track, track bed, and track right-of-way inspections to identify safety risks
· Replace or repair rails rail anchors, spikes, ballasts, ties and related components as needed
· Perform other track maintenance, repair and install tasks as needed, which might involve operating heavy equipment
· Maintain track beds that are free from vegetation and debris and ensure moveable track parts are unobstructed and can move freely
· Continually adhere to company and industry safety rules, practices and procedures
· Build & maintain a positive work environment with colleagues, supervisors, contractors and railroad guests
Required Qualifications:
· Demonstrable, effective leadership experience
· Possess a valid Class C driver license
· Experience welding or possess a welding certificate (professional, personal and/or volunteer welding will be considered)
· Experience operating heavy equipment such as construction or farm equipment, etc.
· Experience reading and understanding federal regulatory documents, operating/safety rules, bulletins, and special instructions
· Ability to lift 80 lbs.
